Antelopes Break Into District Win Column

Basketball Round-up

The Bold Gold snagged the elusive first District 3-2A basketball win Friday night against Forsan, 47-37, at Antelope Arena.

"I was happy for our guys to finally get that first district win.  They have been playing their hearts out all season long, we were long over due for a win like this one," said Head Coach Jimmy Toney.

Toney's varsity boys team started and ended the game with just seven players due to injuries and illness.  "I was a little worried about our players getting into foul trouble, but I knew physically that they would make it through."

The Lopes kept pace with the Buffaloes (3-6 in district)  through the first quarter and then took a three point lead into the locker room at half time.  Post, now 1-8 in league play, went on to outscore Forsan in the second half to win by ten points, 47-37.

Senior wing man Corbin McDonald was the games top scorer with 18 points.  In the fourth quarter, he applied the pressure to ensure Post a victory by scoring eight points most coming from defensive take-a-ways.  When did Toney feel like the game was in the bag?  "...when Corbin (McDonald) was shooting free throws at the end to put us up by 10.  I have always had a hard time relaxing and feeling like my team had the game won until the buzzer goes off at the end of the game."

Both Dalton Holly and Taylor Soto contributed 10 points each for the Antelopes.

Post's shooting from the filed appeared to improve but the Lopes continue to struggle from the free throw line hitting just 12 of 25 tries, or 48%.

Coach Toney concluded that his players "have been playing their hearts out all season long, we were long over due for a win like this one.  Being close in most of our district games and always coming up short is tough to go through.  I'm very proud of our guys for always playing hard till the end, and against Forsan they were rewarded with a W.  This was one hurdle we needed to jump to continue to get better."

The Lady Lopes (1-10) hurt themselves with turnovers especially in the fourth quarter losing to Forsan 37-31.  Post took a 27-23 lead into the final period but the Lady Buffs were able to outscore the home team 14-4 to claim the win.

Forsan's senior Cheyenne Galloway was the game's leading scorer with 12.  Both Matti Smith and Skylar Jones chipped in 8 points a piece for the L-Lopes.

The JV Lady Lopes played a close game with a fourth quarter surge but fell short, 49-40.  Callie Odom produced 17 points and Cheyenne Gill added 7 for Post.

The junior varsity Antelopes ended the game with five players due to foul trouble allowing Forsan to add points from the free throw line in the end to claim the win 48-36.
