Realignment Results in Same Districts, New Members

Post back with familiar schools

Published Feb. 8, 2012 @ 9:15 p.m.

On February 2 athletic directors from the area met in Lubbock to bust open the realignment pinata to see what they'll have to chew on for the next two years.

Early that morning, the decisions by the Texas University Interscholastic League (UIL) for athletic and extra curricular activity districts were unveiled.

For football, Post will remain in District 2-2A in Division 2 but will have new members in the six team league.  Post will face familiar longtime opponents Abernathy (Antelopes), Floydada (Whirlwinds) and Lubbock Roosevelt (Eagles).  Not so familiar are Olton (Mustangs) and Tulia (Hornets).   The new district was not much of a surprise for Athletic Director/Head Football Coach Steve Smith: "It is almost exactly what I predicted.  I had Tulia going north and Colorado City with the group listed."  (Click here for a Google map of the locations.)

For the past two years, Post has traveled mostly south long distances to play games.  But starting next football season, the Lopes head north to closer and possibly colder destinations.  Lope fans will travel between 35 and 110 miles over the next two years with Roosevelt being the closest and Tulia the farthest.  Olton, situated beween Plainview and Muleshoe, is about 96 miles from Post.

Olton was moved up from Conference 1A.  The Mustangs may remember Post in a bad way because in early November last year they were eliminated from the playoffs in the Bi-district round by Stamford 35-32 at Redman Stadium.

As far as the 2012 football season, Post ISD has released a preliminary schedule as follows:  Aug. 17th, Brownfield-scrimmage here; Aug. 24th, scrimmage at Sudan; Aug. 31st, game at Morton; Sept. 7th, Lamesa here; Sept. 14th, at Slaton; Sept. 21st, Tahoka here; Sept. 28th Denver City here; Oct. 5th, Open; Oct. 12 at *Roosevelt; Oct. 19th at Tulia; Oct. 26th, *Floydada here; Nov. 2nd at *Olton; and Nov. 9th here against *Abernathy.  (*District 2-AA Game).

Coach Smith commented "I think there will be some good football played and I think it gives Post the opportunity to renew some old rivalries. Also, it puts us competing with schools whose demographics more closely reflect ours.  I am looking forward to next year with great enthusiasm and expectations."

So what happened to Idalou?  The school was moved up to the Division I, or the big school 2A group.  They are in the same district with Brownfield, Denver City, Kermit, Slaton and Lamesa who was demoted from the 3A conference.

For basketball and all other sports (other than Volleyball) and UIL activities, PISD lines up in District 3-2A with Childress, Floydada, Idalou, Lubbock Roosevelt and Slaton.  Why does the UIL form different districts for basketball?  "Except for Childress, the travel is less than our football district.  For most districts this is the case," explained Coach Smith.

The 2012 volleyball season will be Post's first year assigned to a distict.  We'll share that information when available.
