Berry, Ramirez set new records
Published April 16, 2012 @ 11:15 p.m.
DENVER CITY - The Post High School track and field program made great strides in the 2012 District 3-2A meet on Friday. Both varsity teams finished second, the boys' JV were declared District Champions, more PISD school records were broken and twelve Post athletes qualified for the Region 1 meet set for April 27-28 at Odessa's Ratliff Stadium.
The host school Denver City squeaked by the Lady Lopes by just eleven points to win the meet, 134 to 123. Lubbock Roosevelt followed in third place with 116, and then Colorado City with 63, Slaton with 62, Stanton with 46, Coahoma had 31 and Forsan scored 30 points.
The home track advantage also applied to the varsity boys as the Mustangs of D-City chalked up 136 points to Post's 103. Then it was Slaton with 92, Stanton with 68, Forsan with 65, Colorado City had 57, Coahoma 54, and Roosevelt with 44 points.
Individual performances by the Post varsity athletes qualified twelve for a trip to Odessa at the end of the month.
The list of Lady Lopes is topped with Haily Berry who reestablished herself as the record holder in the triple jump by a distance of 37' 4.5", extending her former season best by 8.5". She also qualified in the long jump, the 200 meter dash, and the sprint and mile relays.
Meanwhile, Alexis Ramirez set the school record in the shot put with a toss of 37' 5.5" to win the event. She also placed second in the discus with a throw of 99'.
Joining Berry in the relays were Kelby Oden, Bethany Curtis and Matti Smith. All three ladies qualified for the regional meet in other events, also. Oden placed third in the long jump, Curtis was third in the 400 meter dash and Smith finished third in the 200 meter.

As expected Antelope senior Corbin McDonald, with not much effort, won both the high and triple jumps. He leaped over the pole at 6'2" and triple jumped 45' 6.5". He also qualified for the regional meet in the 100 meter dash and the sprint and 800 meter relays.
Sophomore D.J. Brown placed third in the 200 meter dash and he'll accompany his teammates in the sprint and 800 meter relays at the regional meet. Winning with McDonald and Brown in the sprint relay were Nathaniel Gill and Steven Howard and in the 800 meter race was senior Matt Soto and junior Vance Blair.
Blair also qualified in the pole vault as he vaulted 10' which was good enough for second place.
Sophomore discus thrower Travis Greathouse moves on to regionals with a second place effort throwing 130' .5".
