Giles McCrary, Sr.

1919 - 2011

Flags in Post are flying at half mast in memory of longtime Post civic leader and former mayor Giles McCrary Sr.

Services for McCrary, 91, of Post will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jerry Koch and Rev. Elizabeth Abraham officiating. Burial in Terrace Cemetery will be under the direction of Hudman Funeral Home.

Giles died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011 in Lubbock. He was born November 5, 1919 in Ft. Worth to I. N. and Nell (Connell) McCrary. He married Louise Luton on May 25, 1940 in Ft. Worth. He was a Army vetern of WWII. He graduated from Washington & Lee University in 1942. He was later awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters from Texas Tech University Health Science Center.

Giles was an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Post. He was mayor of Post from 1969 until 1991. The citizens of Post honored him as Citizen of the Year in 1985 and Giles and his wife, Louise were named Citizens of the Year in 2010. Giles was a life member of Masonic Lodge #1058, a member of the Post Rotary Club and of the VFW. He was currently president of the OS Museum in Post.
Survivors include his wife Louise McCrary of Post; a daughter, Mary McCrary of Lubbock; a son Giles McCrary Jr. of Ft. Worth, 4 grandchildren: Molly McCrary of Austin, Michael Prather of Post, Giles McCrary III of London, England and Isaac McCrary of Germany and 5 great-grandchildren.
