REDMAN STADIUM - The defending 2-A Division II state champs prove their case for a second place ranking as the Idalou Wildcats controlled the game to blank the Antelopes, 46-0.
Third year senior starting quarterback Alec Estes threw the ball six times, three of those for touchdowns in the district game in week seven of the season at Jimmie Redman Memorial Stadium. Four of his completed passed were to different receivers for a total of 77 yards.
Post's QB Pake Jones completed two passes for a total of 32 yards. One was to Dakota McDonald for 25 yards and the other to Dalton Holly for seven yards.
Idalou's signature defense was again stifling to its opponent allowing Post into Wildcat territory just twice in the game and into the red zone only once.
Idalou played back-up players most of the fourth quarter. But with less than a minute and the Bold Gold with first and goal from the four yard line and the score 46-0, the 'Cat's coaching staff hurried in the starting defense to keep the Lopes off the scoreboard. Four plays later Idalou had the ball with a few seconds left to run out the clock for a shut-out.
After the game, an unnamed Antelope fan expressed that he was very upset at the visiting Wildcat coaching staff saying "what will six points hurt them?" Post Head Coach Steve Smith explained "they probably have a goal to allow some sort of low point total or they don't feel that if they don't win big enough it reflects on the polls." The Wildcats came into the game ranked second in state in 2-A, Division II conference.
Positives for the Antelopes included two blocked extra points by Matt Soto, QB Jones ran for 59 yards on 14 carries and fullback Vance Blair ran the ball 17 times for 56 yards. Also, Dakota McDonald had his first catch of the season for a 25 yard first down conversion. He was also involved in six tackles, three were solo stops.
McDonald, a senior, was chosen the Post Insurance "Antelope of the Game" by the Post Sports Radio crew.
Even after a tough loss, Coach Smith finds the silver lining: "Idalou's athletic ability and how well they play technically sound football is something we aspire to. It is a good measure and there are lessons to be learned. We are in the infancy of a program that teaches the football skills needed to be great and I believe the character and attitude to be first class. The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."
