Antelopes Stay Unbeaten

OT win completes sweep of Slaton

Published Sept. 17, 2012 @ 5:31 p.m.

SLATON - The ultimate nail biter of a football game was witnessed Friday night at Tiger Stadium as the outcome was determined in overtime.  With the score tied at 15, and after scoring first in the extra period, the Bold Gold defense kept Slaton from advancing the ball on four tries to win the game 22-15.

In overtime, Post (3-0) started 25 yards from the end zone.  On second down and seven from the 22 yard line, Head Coach Steve Smith went back to a play that worked well for the Lopes earlier in the game for a 39 yard gainer.  The end around sweep by receiver Dalton Holly gave the Lopes the lead and the extra point kick by Paul Martinez the seven point advantage.

Then the Slaton Tigers (2-1) had their chance from the 25 yard line to either advance the ball for a first down to stay alive or score to match or beat the Antelopes.  The stubborn Bold Gold defense had other plans and would only allow one thing, four plays and game over and the Post celebration began.

The excitement of the players and the coaches was that of a championship win.  Head Coach Steve Smith disagreed with that depiction saying "oh, not even close, but we will compare it hopefully one day."  For Post fans beating arch rival Slaton is huge and even bigger winning on the Tigers' field.

Friday's game completed a victorious sweep of Slaton starting with the 7th grade.  Click here for the story.

Again the opponent scored first for the third straight game.  Again the Lopes weren't phased.  On Slaton's second possession, Bryce Whaley found Trevone Richardson for a 12 yard catch and run touch down and the Tigers converted a two point conversion to own a 8-0 lead with 6:05 remaining in the first.

Later in the quarter the Lopes forced Slaton to punt and at the receiving end was D.J. Brown who turned the play it into 58 yard touchdown return getting Post on the board with 2:39 remaining.  The score was tied at 8 after quarterback Pake Jones ran the ball for a two point conversion.

Slaton's Whaley quickly replied on the next possession with a 54 yard TD run to return the lead to the Tigers 15-8 after the PAT by Jorge Simental.

On the next possession with :56 on the first quarter clock, the Antelopes drove the ball into the second period and 60 yards on nine plays topped off with a seven yard scoring strike from Jones to tight end Paden Babb in the end zone.  Martinez's kick was good and the score was tied at 15 at the 7:38 mark in the second.

The last score of the game was in overtime when the Bold Gold claimed their third consecutive win.

The only obvious issue for the Lopes was penalties, 14 combining for 120 yards.  Most infractions were called on the offense.  Coach Smith pointed out that the referees were a little particular.  "The refs where calling the smallest of movements, if we even coughed it was a penalty.  I do not think a lot of it was anyone actually simulating a start.  Just a picky umpire."

D.J. Brown led the game with 124 yards on 19 carries.   Jones out passed his opponent completing four passes for 40 yards.

The Post defense was led by Nathan Gills 12 tackles, one for a QB sack.  Close behind was Alan Alaniz and Bryan Smith with 10 stops each.  In the secondary Campbell Kirkpatrick broke up two passes and Brown tipped away one.

"It was a great effort on the kids and coaches parts.  The fans were great also.  We are a long way from playing a good game, but we are playing with great effort and that goes a long way toward winning games," added Smith.

The Lopes take their 3-0 record against the Tahoka Bulldogs (1-2) Friday at Redman Stadium.   If you can't make the game, hear the play by play action on PostSportsRadio.com.
