Post Basketball vs. Stanton

Published Jan. 8, 2012 @ midnight

The Lady Lopes 8-1 lead in the early going of the first quarter against Stanton was short lived but the outsized varsity Post girls team hung tough in the District 3-2A game Friday at Antelope Arena, but lost in a high scoring game, 67-55.

With the game tied at 26 to start the third quarter, the Lady Lopes (1-4 in district) found it difficult handling the Lady Buffs half court trap which caused turnovers that turned into points.  Stanton outscored Post by 10 in the third, 23-13 which was the turning point in the game.

The L-Lopes kept pace with Stanton in the final period, 18-16, executing a good press themselves but was not enough to make up the ten point difference.

The Lady Buffs 6'2" center Jennifer Henly was hard to contain in the paint as she finished the game with 33 points.

Once again Post received scoring from the entire roster and a healthy contribution from both post position players Shirley Araiza and Sara Greer with 10 points each.  Both fouled out of the game.  Point guard Haily Berry was the Lady Lopes leading scorer with 12.

In the final game of the night, both the Post Antelopes and the Stanton Buffaloes displayed plenty of hustle, but pour shooting as the Buffs improved to 2-1 in district play with a 32-27 win.

Post, now with a 0-3 district record, didn't get clicking until the third outscoring Stanton 11-6 in that period.  The scoring surge put the Lopes with-in three points entering the final period, down 26-23.

The game's scoring leader was Stanton's 6'5" center Scott Smith who made most of his 11 points in the first half. Post's 1-2-2 zone defense, which positioned the much shorter Vance Blair defending Smith, kept the Buffalo fairly quiet in the second half.

Senior Antelope guard Corbin McDonald led Post in scoring with 8.

The Antelope Athletic Booster Club sponsored a 3-point shooting contest at half time of the boys varsity game.  Attendees were able to purchase $1 raffle tickets for a drawing to decide the participants.  Post student manager Danny Shelton out shot Coach Toby Allen to win $30 and a Post basketball t-shirt.
