Bearcats Squeak-out Win

Hawley 21, Post 20

Published Oct. 29, 2011 @ 6:20 p.m.

REDMAN STADIUM - With Post up 20-14 with 2:10 remaining in the game, the Hawley Bearcats marched 67 yards in nine plays to tie the game at 20 with just :06 on the clock.  Kicker Houston Schoonmaker made the PAT.

Due to referee confusion, there was actually :13 when the Bearcats scored.  So, the clock was reset prior to the ensuing kickoff, giving the Lopes a longer than expected glimmer of hope for a possible last second score.  But, Hawley was able to contain Post to win, 21-20.

"The biggest play in the game was probably when we had them to 4th down on their final drive and they converted," said Head Coach Steve Smith.  The possession ended in the winning score for Hawley.

The Antelopes outplayed the Bearcats according to the statistics.  Post tallied 320 to Hawley's 302 total offensive yards.  The difference was in the running game, 278 to 260.   Seventy of the 'Cats yards were for naught when Dylan Sanchez broke loose from the pack and carried the ball 70 yards to about the Post 10 yard line, when Lope D.J. Brown stripped the ball from behind and then recovered it on the 5 yard line.  "We left a TD on the field in the first half but they also lost one when D.J. stripped the ball," commented Smith.  He was referring to earlier in the second quarter when Hawley executed a goal line stand that kept the Bold Gold from scoring on four attempts from inside the 3 yard line.

Brown, a sophomore, was the game's leading rusher with 109 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns.  Add the previously mentioned extra effort defensive play and that was enough for the Post Sports Radio crew to name D.J. the "Antelope of the Game" for the second time this season.  The first time was the season opener against Sundown.

Post scored all 20 points in the second half, thirteen in the fourth quarter.  Fullback Vance Blair crossed the goal line to give the Lopes the lead with 2:10 remaining in the game.  The extra point was no good leaving the score 20-14, Post, and the ball going back to Hawley with three time outs and enough time to score the final TD.

The Bearcats kept their playoff hopes alive as they are in third place by themselves going into the final game of the season.  Much improvement after finishing last in district in 2010.

A message from Steve smith, Post Athletic Director and Head Football Coach:  "I appreciate the support and backing from parents and fans this year.  People who watched practices saw how hard we are working and know we are going to build a strong program.  The discipline and the responsibility we demand of the players will start to show and the main goal of developing young men of character and servant leaders will make the Bold Gold proud again.  There are so may community members that contribute time and resources to help support us, I can not possibly express my gratitude worthy of their efforts."
