STANTON -  The rushing battle Friday night at Buffalo Stadium was derailed by turnovers and untimely penalties giving Stanton more time to run the ball in the Antelopes 45-20 loss in the District 2-2A, Division II game.

Trailing 35-6 going into the final quarter, Post (2-7, 1-4) never gave up and played their best offense of the game scoring 14 points.  "We had a big talk and we challenged them to play harder and longer," explained Head Coach Steve Smith.

Post's senior Matt Soto had a breakout game from the the full back position running for a team leading 94 yards. Soto carried the ball 18 times averaging just over 5 yards a touch and scored the Lope's final TD.  Coach Smith complemented  "Matt always plays hard and works hard.  I had confidence he could go in and do a great job for us running the ball."

Matt played both ways.  On defense he was credited with four solo tackles including a sack and assisted on many other take downs.

Because of his efforts, Matt Soto was named the Post Insurance "Antelope of the Game" by the Post Sports Radio crew.

If Stanton (3-5, 1-3) chose a "Buffalo of the Game", it would be Andres Chavez.  The 5'5", 150 pound junior running back, was the games leading rusher with 132 yards on just three carries each for a touchdown, for a 44 yard average per run.  Also, Chavez was perfect as his team's kicker, converting six PATs and ending the game with a 36 yard field goal.

The Buffaloes scored first on the games' opening possession going 62 yards on seven plays when sophomore running back Tim Anderson recorded his first of two TDs from 23 yards out with 8:44 in the first quarter.

The Antelopes committed the first of three lost fumbles on its first play from scrimmage.  But the Lope defense quickly regrouped to stop the Buffs on four plays.  Just as the Bold Gold obtained momentum, they were stopped at mid field after converting two first downs on the drive, giving the ball back to Stanton on downs.  On the second play from scrimmage, Anderson found a hole to run 46 yards to widen the gap to 14-0, Buffaloes.  He finished the night rushing for 114 yards and two touchdowns.

In the second quarter with the score 21-0, Post got on the board when Pake Jones punched it in from the one at the 2:40 mark.

It was in the fourth quarter that Post scored twice to close Stanton's lead.  On the possession before Soto's TD which started in the third quarter, running back D.J. Brown topped off a 80 yard 13 play drive with a 20 yard scamper for six points.  Jones hit Dalton Holly in the endzone on the PAT conversion.  Brown had an impressive game by rushing for 82 yards and returning four kickoffs for 121 yards for a total of 203 yards of production.  His longest return was from the endzone for 62 yards.

"We need to start faster in games and instead of waiting to feel out the game, we need to come out swinging.  We have to be more aggressive from the opening whistle," said Smith.

Both teams combined for 568 yards of rushing and 91 yards in the air for a game total of 659 yards of offensive production.
