Post Public Library Receives Grant

The monthly Book Talk event held at The Heritage House has made it possible for the Post Public Library to receive a $1000 grant from the PEARL project through University of North Texas. The grant was made possible by the Robert and Ruby Priddy Charitable Trust, Wichita Falls, TX.
Post librarian Peggy Ashley developed the idea of a regular time for discussion about books and reading with the Caprock Cultural Association, a local non-profit. The “Book Talk” group began meeting earlier this year at noon the last Friday of each month. Ashley brings new books and favorite books from the library to introduce to the group and encourages participants to share information about what books they are reading. "The dedication of this group to continue Book Talk each month stood out among the other rural library programs," Ashley said. "Many had good ideas, but did not develop ongoing programs."
The PEARL (Promoting & Enhancing the Advancement of Rural Libraries) project is a 3 year project designed to enhance the role of public libraries in targeted rural communities in Texas. "Public libraries in rural communities are facing enormous challenges," said Dr. Yunfei Du, the Principal Investigator for the project. "They are experiencing an increase in demand for services while simultaneously dealing with declining tax bases, lack of an educated workforce, decreasing funding, and an aging population."
Because of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, the next meeting of Book Talk will be at Noon, January 27, 2012.
