Football and Volleyball Teams Begin Summer Workouts

New Home for Both Coaches

The 2011 football and volleyball seasons officially began Monday, August 1st.

And for both sports' head coaches, it's the first official day on their respective playing surfaces for the Post Independent School District.

Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Steve Smith, who comes to us from Archer City, will take the practice field bright and early with the boys ready for drills at 7:30 each morning of the first week. The first session should end about 9:30 am with the second two hour session to begin at 6:30 pm.

The record heat of this summer is of concern and Smith has a plan to handle it.  "The first week we go at the cooler times.  But, you don't want to completely avoid the heat.  You have to get your team acclimatized to the heat because when school starts, we have to workout at 4:00 every day so they have to become accustomed to it."  (See football photos.)

The Antelope's second week of summer sessions will last from 3:30 till 8:30 PM with a break in the middle.  Coach Smith plans to stay with the evening schedule until school starts on August 22. 

The coach added "the trainers will monitor the hydration of the team and watch for kids who are struggling. We will know who has been working out all summer and who has not and keep an eye on them."   

Post's first volleyball coach, Charlyn Hohman, won't have the heat issue inside the Antelope Arena as she prepares her young players for the non-district (or practice) season.  The volleyball squads will have four vigorous days of workouts before they have the first scrimmage Friday, August 5th at Olton.

Hohman, who coached last season at Cross Roads, explained that running and conditioning will be from 9:30 to 10:30 each morning followed by weight lifting from 11:00 AM to noon.  Then volleyball drills go from 1:00 to 3:30 PM.  (See volleyball photos.)
