(Editor's Note:  Due to the delay in the primary election which will be held May 29, we will repost candidate announcements that ran on garzapost.com during the last quarter of 2011.)

To the citizens of Garza County, I, Phil Mathews, would like to take this opportunity to announce my candidacy for Sheriff in the Republican Primary.

I was born in Morton, Texas, and moved to Post in 1968. I graduated from Post High School in 1972. While in high school I developed an interest in law enforcement and decided that while serving in the United States Air force I would attend college and make my career law enforcement. While stationed at Cannon Air Force Base, Clovis, New Mexico, I attended college at Eastern New Mexico University, after discharge I moved to Midland and graduated from Midland College with a degree in Criminal Justice. At this point I embarked on my law enforcement career. My tenure spanned over twenty eight years, this included extensive experience, training and leadership. My law enforcement experience includes working as a Deputy Sheriff in Midland County and Ector County, as a Police Officer in Midland and as a Texas State Trooper.  After I retired, I was a substitute teacher for the Post Middle School and High School.

My wife, Windy, and I have made Post and Garza County our home since 1999.  Windy, works as a nurse here in Post. Together we have four sons and five grandchildren. My oldest son, Lance, is a homicide detective with the Bryan Police department. Dustin is a Criminal Investigator with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Josh is currently serving his country in the United States Army and my youngest son, Travis, who is also a graduate of Post High School, is currently serving his country in the United States Navy.  My grandchildren are Mackenzie, Kendall, Garrett, Amelia and Grant.

I am a man of vision and plan to train my personnel to work faster and smarter, keeping law enforcement ahead of the criminals. As your Sheriff I will strive to provide a safe environment for ALL citizens of Garza County and to make Post, Southland and Justiceburg good places to have a home and raise a family.  I will be committed to the residents of Garza County with an Open Door Policy as well as availability.  I look forward to serving my community for many years.
