Dick Odom of Post is shown with some of his prize-winning ribs. Odom, who joined the BBQ Cook Off circuit about a year ago, has won recognition for his tastey cooking including Grand Champion at the recent event in Slaton. "Smokin’ in the Park" Event This Weekend

BBQ cook off sponsored by Post Rotary Club

Published Aug. 31, 2011 @ 4:18 p.m.

You're going to see lots of smoke in City Park this weekend – the pungent, spicey smoke of bar-b-que brisket, pork spare ribs and chicken.  The Post Rotary Club is sponsoring the first cook off of this kind to be held in our community. Contestants from area towns and as far away as the Dallas Metroplex will join local cooks for the event.  The club is offering generous prizes for the best cooks with guaranteed payouts to the Grand Champion of $500; Reserve Grand $250; First Place Each Division $250; Second Place Each Division $150; and Third Place Each Division $100.

There will also be a prize for Best Beans.  Entry fee for all three meats is $100; entry fee for “jackpot beans” is $10.  There won't be an opportunity for the public to taste the results of the cook off competition this year although the Rotary Club hopes to add that to next year's event.

The event is sanctioned by  the Lonestar Barbecue Society and approximately 30 cooking teams have indicated they plan to participate.  There is still time to get in on the cooking action.  Registration will be accepted until the cook’s meeting on Saturday morning, 9 a.m.  Call Dave Tyler 806-786-5137 or email rotaryclubofpost@gmail.com for more information.
