Lopes Open with Powerhouse Sundown

JV here on Thursday, Varsity there on Friday

Published Aug. 24, 2011 @ 10:10 p.m.

The Bold Gold face a familiar season opening opponent with the Sundown Roughnecks of District 3-1A, Division I.  Last year, here, Sundown varsity outplayed the Lopes, 39-13.

Friday night at 7:30 p.m., coach Steve Smith kicks off the Post leg of his head coaching career.

Sundown made it to the bi-district playoff game and posted a 7-4 season record in 2010.   They are expected to win their district this year.

Although the 'Necks have an experienced six starters returning on both sides of the ball, the player to keep an eye on is Garret Carter.  The 6 foot 190 pound running back ran for over 1300 yards last year and is the preseason pick to to be the districts offensive most valuable player.

Post's head coach Steve Smith plans to go nose-to-nose with the physical Roughnecks.  "They do a lot of misdirection and power type plays which make it very hard to defend.  They will try to power over us and then hit us quick outside.  We have to be physical and we have to tackle well to give ourselves a good chance to stop their offense," said Smith.  "You have to bring your "A" game, pressure them and try to force turnovers."

Offensively, the Antelopes must "control the ball and put points on the board,"  explained the coach.

The junior varsity game is set for Thursday at 6:00 p.m. here at Jimmy Redman Memorial Stadium.
